The Sixth AnniversarEEEEEE! Romp

by Gregg Pearlman

January 5, 2003

Anniversary Number Six came along in August, and, of course, I was in the middle of doing no EEEEEE! writing at that time. I probably would have picked things up in September, at least, except I was afraid to add anything to EEEEEE!, lest I jinx the Giants, who were, for a change, doing well without my help. Indeed, for precisely that reason, one EEEEEE! writer, Rick Braverman, virtually commanded me not to update EEEEEE! until after the World Series.

Even so, my feelings about EEEEEE! haven't changed since the last Postmortem. That is, I enjoy doing EEEEEE!, but I don't have the time or energy to devote to it that I've had in the past. We still won't be seeing any journal-type season notes for the foreseeable future, but I hope to actually complete the standalone articles and "Looks at Books" pieces I mentioned in the last anniversary piece, and, as always, I'm happy to run articles by other writers who want to contribute. And, as always, I'm easy to find in the Giants newsgroup.

The support I continue to receive from readers is still vastly appreciated. I hope that doesn't go away. Believe me, it makes my day to get an e-mail praising EEEEEE! in some way, or just having some "back atcha" fun. It helps to see that the Giants make you all suffer as much as I do, what with misery loving company and all.

Plus, naturally, I still marvel at the dedication of "my stable of writers." These are all people who have other, actual jobs and other, actual commitments. Writing is time consuming. For me it's not so bad -- I tend to write reasonably quickly -- but most writers are not the kind of people to whom you can say, "Okay, I need, I dunno, five thousand words by noon tomorrow, and all that nonsense about your job, your family, and your other boatloads of commitments is your problem.

I know, too, that these folks agonize over their EEEEEE! pieces. I realize it's a "good" kind of agony, for the most part, but it's still very touching that it matters so much to them to give it their best shot, especially given that not only are they doing this for free, the worldwide recognition their efforts bring is pretty sparse.

For my part, all I can say is that I'll try to come up with articles here and there. One a month shouldn't be that much to ask for, but I've discovered that sometimes it is. That said, I do hope that despite the rather static nature of the home page for the past couple of years, you'll still be interested enough to check in now and again to see if anything's changed. And, as always, thanks for your support and the time you spend reading the pieces on this website.
