Articles
Newest
- Whoever Has a Cold Makes the
Rules: In a couple of February 4 articles, Jayson Stark of ESPN
proposed numerous rule changes to Major League Baseball. Here's what I have
to say, irrespective of any possible copyright violations.
On the Giants
- Simply Mort, because I couldn't
decide whether it was a postmortem, premortem, both, or neither.
On Giants Fandom
- My 1987 essay about what being a Giants
fan is like.
- Rookie Sleeves -- a look at the
Giants Fantasy Camp by Woody, an actual professional journalist writing under
an assumed name.
- Helmet Blues, Rick Braverman's
American In Paris (well, Near Paris) perspective on baseball in France.
On Ballparks
- A Fond Farewell to an Old Dump,
edited by Richard Booroojian and Julie Nichols -- Giants newsgroup members
and other Giants fans share their recollections of Candlestick Park.
- Pac Bell Park Thoughts --
Todd Hawley had the good fortune to attend the Giants' first regular-season
victory at Pacific Bell Park, and I didn't.
- Say Hey Day -- Todd Hawley attended
the dedication of the Willie Mays statue at Pacific Bell Park, and you didn't.
On EEEEEE!
2002 Postmortem
- "Why Does It Matter So Much?" by Gregg
Pearlman: A tiptoe through the tulips of the mind of a sports fanatic, especially
one who knows he's pretty much the reason the Giants have never won a World
Championship.
- "The Sixth AnniversarEEEEEE! Romp"
by Gregg Pearlman: When EEEEEE! hit the Web in 1996, the Giants were
terrible. Now they're damn near the defending World Champion. Coincidence?
Ha.
- "A 2003 Premortem, of Sorts"
by Gregg Pearlman: Well, if nothing else, at least it's not a whole article
devoted to Tsuyoshi Shinjo.
- "Like Candy for Chad" by Tom Austin,
who, in his own colorful way, exposes his pain and lets you know that it's
your fault.
- It's Still About Free Agency, by Contributing
Editor David Beck -- because it's still about free agency.
- "The Sports Fanatic: Evolution at its
Finest" by Jamal Bernhard, making his EEEEEE! debut --a
different approach to the exploration of the psyche of the sports psycho.
- "Cruel Fate Taunts the Giants Yet Again"
by Contributing Editor Richard Booroojian, who blames himself for Game Six,
even though it's clearly Gregg's fault.
- "Well, At Least Now We All Know..."
by John Broesamle, who also, insightfully, blames Gregg in his EEEEEE!
debut. That's John's debut, not Gregg's.
- "Asparagus, Boiling Lead, Canada..."
by Grant Brisbee, whose angst over the World Series knows no bounds (which,
in itself, doesn't exactly make him unique).
- "A Walk Through All The Players I Had
Time To Write About: The San Francisco Giants 2002 In Review"
by Adam Coutts, who follows up his first venture into EEEEEE! with
a three-month stay at a Buddhist monastery -- and you think we're kidding.
- "So Close" by Todd Hawley -- hard to
get nostalgic about this one.
- "Here We Go Again: A Giants Fan's 2002
Journal" by David Malbuff, who starts with the stretch run and takes
us all the way through the debacle that is Game Six, and then the next debacle
that is Game Seven, all while failing, unaccountably, to blame Gregg.
2001 Postmortem
- "Once Again Uncle Gregg Pretends to Take
You Inside the Numbers!": As has become an annual tradition, I downloaded
a bunch of Giants stats, fretted over the prospect of examining them, then
said "The hell with it" and made everything up. Well, that last
part isn't quite true.
- "Amazing, Astonishing, Astounding":
If you guessed that this might be Gregg's piece about Barry Bonds, guess again.
You'd be right both times, though.
- "Radio Silence: The Fifth AnniversarEEEEEE!,
Eons Late": Well, yeah, it's a little late for anniversary pieces,
but there you are. Also, there'll be some changes in EEEEEE!
- "Just an Ordinary Jo": Gregg
doesn't mind the new center fielder; he's just a little concerned, is all.
- "Postmortem for Baseball, As Always":
Contributing Editor David Beck is back... and he's pissed. In fact, for more,
please what else Dave has to say in an open
letter to Rob Neyer of ESPN.com.
- "A Great Record Spoiled": Contributing
Editor Richard Booroojian gives us his chronological examination of the 2001
season, making us relive it as only he can.
- "Distant Perspective": Rick Braverman
doesn't understand it either, but it sure isn't fair.
- "We're Used to Life Flipping Us Off":
Though usually wasted on the young, youth this time is not wasted on Grant
Brisbee, who manages to combine a paucity of years with a level of true suffering
as befits even the most veteran of Giants fans.
- "The Day All Hell Broke Loose": Todd
Hawley brings us back to one horrible, unforgettable day.
2000 Postmortem
- The EEEEEE! Postmortem Brings
You Professor Gregg and His Pal, Statistical Hijinx!: As usual, I've
downloaded a bunch of Giants stats, examined them with the usual thoroughness,
and slapped something together.
- Sabes: I Guess I Owe Ya: What
is most likely my long-overdue mea culpa. Sort of. The short version
is, Brian Sabean deserves an awful lot more credit than I've given him over
the years.
- A Special Twist of the Knife:
EEEEEE! vet -- that's "veteran," as opposed to "veterinarian" -- Tom
Austin offers his view of a season that we can feel pretty good about, really.
- Reports of the WWF Yankees' Demise
Were a Bit Premature: Contributing Editor David Beck is pretty annoyed
with Major League Baseball these days.
- Mostly Fun Times in a Jewel by the
Bay: Contributing Editor Richard Booroojian's chronological examination
of the 2000 season brings smiles; it brings frowns. Either way, folks, have
a box of Kleenex nearby.
- The Big Sneeze: In what,
in its second year, has become an annual tradition here at the Postmortem
offices, EEEEEE! welcomes not one but two first-time writers. This
one's Grant Brisbee, who was strangely reluctant to submit a bikini photo
of himself. Go figure.
- It Was the Best of Times, It Was
the Worst of Times: Todd Hawley's welcome approach -- fond memories,
and no complaints -- finds a home in the Postmortem.
- The Future's So Bright We Oughta
Wear Shades: Adding a little necessary optimism, Phil Ross makes his
debut here in the Postmortem, and don't you forget it.
1999 Postmortem
- More Number Magic with Uncle
Gregg!: ESPN.com is kind enough to furnish plenty of stats, so I've
downloaded 'em, looked at 'em, and written about 'em in my 1999 Postmortem
piece.
- Requiem for Baseball:
Something awful is happening to baseball. Contributing Editor David Beck leads
the keening in the 1999 Postmortem.
- The Last Candlestick
Game: In his 1999 Postmortem article, Todd Hawley takes an almost
unheard-of approach for EEEEEE! -- fond memories, and no complaints.
- Three Years of Sabes:
In a break with an EEEEEE! tradition that had lasted nearly a fiftieth
of a century, Jesse Thorn debuts here in the 1999 Postmortem, rather than
having contributed previously.
1998 Postmortem
- Uncle Gregg Takes You Inside
the Numbers!: My 1998 Postmortem piece. I've grabbed some numbers
from a couple different sources, looked them, and written about them. It's
a dirty job, and nobody really has to do it, but I've done it anyway.
- The Disastrous 1998
Baseball Season: In the 1998 Postmortem, Contributing Editor David
Beck takes a look at not only the Giants but at all the major happenings (up
to the postseason). As you can tell by the title, this is a jolly, happy,
carefree piece, 'cause Dave's such a Pollyanna.
- The 1998 Giants Give New
Meaning to the Term "Manic-Depressive": Richard Booroojian takes a
chronological approach to a difficult season. It's his world, and welcome
to it.
- My Big Men! My Giants!:
Tom Austin takes a position-by-position, qualitative approach. You can taste
the hot dogs. You can smell the beer. You can hear the security guards kicking
people out for smoking dope or tossing blow-up dolls around. A 1998 Postmortem
staple.
Miscellaneous
- Peter Steen's interview with Gregg
on the Virtually Canadian Broadcast
Network. This is your opportunity to make Gregg feel better by telling
him that he's missed his calling and should've gone into broadcasting, or
some other outrageous lie.The file is in RealAudio format. If you don't have
a RealAudio player, or a variant thereof, you can download one free from RealAudio.
The interview comes from an overall hour-long show, but the downloadable file
includes only the last part -- the eight-and-a-half-minute interview with
Gregg. (Okay, technically, this isn't an article.)
- The Mark Dewey Flap -- All about
the former Giant who refused to participate in the team's "Until There's A
Cure Day" ceremonies in 1996.
- Goodbye, Hank -- A sort of "feel"
piece about the finest baseball broadcaster ever to don a headset.
- The Game: The First Ten Years
-- A long essay about Dave's and my table-top baseball game that we
just can't get into shape; if you don't care for table-top baseball games
and such, it'd probably be best to blow this one off.
GP in BP (the Baseball
Prospectus site)
- Chain
Chain Chain -- the "Trade Chain" article. What's the "Trade Chain"
article, you ask? Why, just a long-promised history piece. Think Bobby Bonds.
(I've got a graphic to go along with that -- not
flashy, but still kind of cool. If you'd like to take a crack at redoing it
and making it easier to follow, I'd love to see what you've got. Hell, if
you can put in little pictures of the players, so much the better....)
- The
Sun Glinted Off His Jewelry as He Homered to Win the Game... -- Radical
premise: sportswriters hate Barry Bonds.
- The
Insiders -- How Baseball Insiders believe they know more than you
do by virtue of being Baseball Insiders; also, make sure to check out the
contest, because I won -- not that I brag about that much, because the Giants'
success in 1997 retroactively makes me look like a boob....
